OCIA: The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults
"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church.
There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church — which is, ofcourse, quite a different thing. "
— The Venerable Fulton Sheen
The millions Fulton Sheen refers to could hardly be blamed for hating Catholics because of the "Fake News" that abounds regarding Catholics and the Catholic Church; for example, we "adore statues"; we "put the Blessed Mother on the same level with God"; we say indulgence is a way to buy our way out of punishment for sin; because the Pope "is a Fascist"; and because the "Church is the defender of Capitalism."
Fake News is not new, but if it were not Fake News and the Church taught or believed a single one of these errors or the myriads of other false accusations...it should be hated. In fact, if we Catholics believed all the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we Catholics would probably hate the Church a thousand times more than the millions of misinformed non-Catholics who do.
The point is, the Church does not believe nor teach any one of them. It follows then that the millions who hate the Catholic Church are directing their hatred against error and not against truth, nor the Catholic Church herself.
