St John of the Cross (1542-1591) was raised in poverty in Spain in the 16th Century but became a poet and reformer of the Carmelite order with the great St Teresa of Avila. His own religious brothers, resenting his holiness and asceticism and his efforts to reform the order, kidnapped and imprisoned John for nine months. During this time, he wrote much of his immortal poetry and entered into a mystical union with God. His moving poem, “The Spiritual Canticle,” woven throughout the film, enriches the story and grants insight into what it means to persevere in love when confronted with suffering. His story speaks to all who long for peace and prayer in their turbulent lives.
